All the winners of the Palio dei Terzieri from 1973 to today
Since 1973, the year of the first edition, the Drappo del Perugino has changed terziere forty times. Each cell in the timeline below represents an edition: the colour identifies the winning terziere. Cells crossed by a diagonal line mark editions that were not held.
In 1974, the Terziere Castello recruited archers from Montalcino. At that time, no rule yet required archers to be born in Città della Pieve or to have lived there for at least five years: it was precisely as a result of this episode that the rule was introduced, to ensure that the competition remained authentically tied to the communities of the three city districts.
The Terziere Castello's choice, however, was seen as unfair and triggered a striking reaction. One of the founding members of the Terziere Casalino, indignant, tore down all the targets set up for the race. Back then those targets were called paglioni, because they were made of straw, and the archery contest was held against fixed targets — a different format from today's, which features the bull carousel with a moving bull-shaped target.
With no paglioni to shoot at, the contest could not go on, and the 1974 Palio was halted directly on the field.
From 1973 to 2025, fifty editions were held. Three editions were skipped: 1974 (suspended on the field), 2020 and 2021 (not held due to the COVID-19 emergency).
